With an estimated 4.5 million units of affordable rental housing in buildings with 2-4 units nationally, the small multifamily housing stock is critical to the preservation of affordable housing. The goal of this session is to take a deep dive into two case studies on 2-4 unit buildings in Chicago’s southwest side: an affordable scattered site development and new prototype for LEED Homes. We will provide an overview of the characteristics of this housing stock and the challenges with making these buildings affordable and high-performing. Additionally, we will provide perspectives from key stakeholders invested in the preservation of the affordable small multifamily housing stock: the architect, developer, and housing energy efficiency advocates.
